Amati Model, 2002
From a 1625 "Grand Amati" pattern, this highly arched violin has a very fine grained top made from Sitka spruce circa 1948, and a one piece back fashioned from deeply figured Pennsylvania maple of 1930s vintage. Tonally, it possesses what I describe as a lovely, mellow "woodiness," and sounds much older than it is. Asking: $25,000.
